LIC AAO Exam Analysis · prelims & mains

LIC does not publish a paper analysis, difficulty ratings or attempt figures, and it does not disclose its question papers. This page sets out what LIC’s documents do confirm about the 2025 (32nd batch) exam — the dates, the section-wise structure of both papers, what each question is worth, how many candidates moved through each stage, and the official cut-offs.

Section-wise paper

Section names, questions, marks and timings are from the 2025 notification; each section is separately timed, and every test except the English ones is offered in English and Hindi. LIC names only the tests, so the topic lists below are commonly tested areas, not an official syllabus.

Prelims · Quantitative Aptitude

35 Q · 35 marks · 20 min. Commonly tested: simplification, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation and arithmetic.

What each question is worth

For AAO (Generalist), LIC states there are no negative marks in the prelims or the mains: your score is the number of questions answered correctly, so a wrong answer and a blank both earn nothing. Because marks per question differ by section, so does the value of each correct answer. Worked out from the official marks and question counts:

SectionMarks per questionPenalty per wrong answer
Prelims · Reasoning Ability1.00None
Prelims · Quantitative Aptitude1.00None
Prelims · English Language (qualifying)1.00None
Mains · Reasoning Ability3.00None
Mains · General Knowledge & Current Affairs2.00None
Mains · Data Analysis & Interpretation3.00None
Mains · Insurance & Financial Market Awareness2.00None

These figures assume marks are spread equally across a section’s questions — LIC states only section totals. The descriptive paper is marked separately and is qualifying only. LIC does not publish good-attempt numbers, so we don’t show any.

How scores are compared

Normalisation, shortlists & cut-offs

Scores from different sessions are equated using the equi-percentile method and reported to two decimals. You must clear each section and the aggregate in both papers. In 2025 the funnel ran: 7,760 Generalist candidates shortlisted for the mains (29 October 2025), 1,119 for interview (4 February 2026), 350 for the pre-recruitment medical exam (9 April 2026), and 333 found eligible after it (14 May 2026). LIC published marks and cut-offs only after the whole process was finalised.

Official 2025 cut-offs for unreserved candidates: 58 out of 70 in the prelims, 232 out of 300 in the mains, and 294 out of 360 on mains plus interview. Every category’s figures are on the cut-off page.

FAQ

Analysis questions, answered

No. LIC publishes the exam structure, dates, result lists and cut-offs, but no difficulty ratings or attempt figures. It also states that its question papers are not disclosed, even after the exam. Analyses you see online are unofficial opinions.
LIC does not publish any such figure, and it would change with every paper, so we don’t quote one. What is official: there is no negative marking for AAO (Generalist), so a wrong answer costs nothing more than a blank — but you still have to clear every sectional minimum and the aggregate cut-off.
No, not for AAO (Generalist). The 2025 notification states there are no negative marks in the prelims or the mains; scores are based on the number of correct answers, equated across sessions.
Not announced. The 2025 (32nd batch) recruitment is complete, and LIC has not yet released the next notification or any exam dates. Watch licindia.in › Careers.
