Overview

How SSC CGL selection works

CGL selection is a multi-stage funnel. You qualify Tier 1 to reach Tier 2; Tier 2 decides your merit; some posts add a qualifying skill test; and document verification confirms your eligibility before the post is allotted.

Stage-by-stage flow

  1. Tier 1 — qualifying CBTClear the category cut-off to be shortlisted for Tier 2. Marks don’t carry forward.
  2. Tier 2 — merit CBTThe stage that decides your rank, with multiple papers depending on the post.
  3. Skill test (if applicable)DEST or CPT for specific posts — qualifying only, not scored.
  4. Document verificationProduce originals to confirm age, education and category.
  5. Final merit & allotmentPosts assigned by Tier 2 rank, category and preference order.
Stage 1

Tier 1 — the gateway

A 60-minute objective CBT across four sections (General Intelligence, GK, Quantitative Aptitude, English), with sectional timers in 2026. It’s purely qualifying — you must clear the category cut-off, but the marks don’t count toward final merit.

Stage 2

Tier 2 — the decider

Tier 2 is where your rank is built. It has multiple papers — Paper I for all posts, with Paper II (Statistics) and Paper III (Finance & Economics) for JSO and AAO respectively. Your Tier 2 performance, after normalization, forms the final merit.

Skill tests: DEST & CPT

Certain posts require a qualifying skill test — you must pass, but the score doesn’t affect your rank.

DESTData Entry Speed Test — e.g. Tax Assistant (~8,000 key depressions/hour)

CPTComputer Proficiency Test — e.g. ASO in CSS/MEA (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Document verification

Shortlisted candidates present original documents — matriculation certificate, degree, category and any relaxation proof — to confirm the details declared in the form. Discrepancies can cost you the post.

A field post may also add a medical exam and physical standards test at this stage.

Final selection

Final merit & post allotment

SSC prepares a category-wise merit list from Tier 2 marks (normalized across shifts). Posts are then allotted by your rank, category and the preference order you filled — the most sought-after posts closing at the highest cut-offs.

FAQ

Selection questions, answered

Tier 1 (qualifying CBT), Tier 2 (merit CBT), a qualifying skill test for some posts, document verification, and finally merit-based post allotment.
No. Tier 1 is only qualifying. Your final rank is built solely from Tier 2 marks, after normalization.
Data-entry roles like Tax Assistant require the DEST; ASO posts in CSS/MEA require the CPT. Both are qualifying only and don’t affect your rank.
Because the exam runs in multiple shifts of varying difficulty, SSC adjusts scores across shifts so candidates are compared fairly. Your normalized Tier 2 marks decide merit.
