Exam pattern questions, answered

Tier 1 is qualifying only — you must clear the cut-off to reach Tier 2, but its marks are not counted in the final merit list. Your rank comes from Tier 2.
Three. Paper I is compulsory for everyone. Paper II (Statistics) is for JSO / Statistical Investigator posts, and Paper III (Finance & Economics) — new in 2026 — is for AAO posts.
Tier 1 deducts 0.50 per wrong answer. Tier 2 Paper I deducts 1 mark in Sections I, II and the Computer MCQs; Papers II and III deduct 0.50. There is no penalty for the DEST or for unattempted questions.
Yes. Each of the four sections has a 15-minute timer and locks automatically when the time is up, so you can’t move marks between sections. Total duration is 60 minutes.
It’s fully online — a Computer-Based Test (CBT) taken on a computer at your allotted exam centre.
Paper I is 150 questions for 450 marks over 2 hours 30 minutes, with each scored question worth 3 marks. Computer Knowledge and the DEST are qualifying.
