Section-wise paper

Section names, questions, marks and timings come from each post’s advertisement and “Acquaint Yourself” booklet. The general aptitude tests share one 45-minute slot, and Professional Knowledge has its own 45 minutes. Every question has five options. Every section except English Language is available in English and Hindi. The Professional Knowledge areas below are SBI’s indicative syllabus, which SBI says is not exhaustive.

Law · Reasoning

25 Q · 25 marks · qualifying · English & Hindi. Shares 45 minutes with English Language. The booklet’s sample questions include ranking in a row, direction-based positions and a scheduling puzzle.

Law · English Language

35 Q · 35 marks · qualifying · English only. The booklet’s samples include error spotting and a passage with fill-in-the-blank words.

Law · Professional Knowledge

50 Q · 50 marks · 45 min · English & Hindi. Indicative syllabus: constitutional law, administrative law, financial sector laws, procedural laws, the new Labour Codes, and statutory interpretation and legal drafting.

Law · Descriptive test

Any 5 of 8 Q · 10 marks each (50) · 45 min, straight after the objective test. Answers are typed on the computer in English or Hindi, with no spellcheck. Hindi answers must be in Devanagari, keyed in with Inscript or Remington (GAIL) mapping.

BMO · Reasoning

15 Q · 15 marks · qualifying · English & Hindi. Shares 45 minutes with Quantitative Aptitude and English Language.

BMO · Quantitative Aptitude

What a wrong answer costs

This is the biggest difference between the two papers. The Law booklet says there is no penalty for a wrong answer, though it advises against random guessing. The BMO booklet deducts one-fourth of a question’s marks for each wrong answer. In both, a question left blank costs nothing. Here are the figures worked out from the official marks and question counts:

SectionMarks per questionPenalty per wrong answer
Law · Reasoning, English (qualifying)1.00None
Law · Professional Knowledge1.00None
BMO · Reasoning, Quant, English (qualifying)1.000.25
BMO · Professional Knowledge2.000.50

The BMO Professional Knowledge figures assume the 100 marks are spread equally across its 50 questions, because SBI states only the test total. The BMO booklet adds that a fractional total penalty for a test is rounded off to the nearest integer. The Law descriptive test is marked out of 10 per question and has no penalty. SBI does not publish good-attempt numbers, so we don’t show any.

How candidates are shortlisted

Cut-offs & shortlisting

In both papers the general aptitude tests are qualifying: you need the minimum marks the Bank sets, and for BMO the Bank may waive them. To be called for interview you must also score at or above the Bank’s cut-off in Professional Knowledge. Law candidates must qualify in the objective and descriptive tests separately, and their written-test merit is Professional Knowledge plus the descriptive score. Candidates are taken from the top of the merit list in each category (for BMO, circle-wise too), and ties at the cut-off go to the older candidate. Neither advertisement gives cut-off marks, and none have been published.

FAQ

Analysis questions, answered

No. SBI publishes the test structure, dates, results and shortlisting rules, but no section-wise difficulty ratings or attempt figures. Any analysis you see online is unofficial opinion.
SBI doesn’t publish any such figure, and it would change with every paper and post, so we don’t quote one. What is official is the marking: no penalty in the Law paper, and one-fourth of a question’s marks lost per wrong answer in the BMO paper.
No. Both were held on 23 August 2026, but the Law paper had Reasoning, English, Professional Knowledge (110 questions) and a descriptive test. The BMO paper had Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English and Professional Knowledge (100 questions, 150 marks) with no descriptive test.
SBI has not announced a date. As of 12 October 2026, no result had been posted for the Law or BMO written test. Results and interview call letters are posted on SBI’s careers page, so check there.
