Exam pattern at a glance
RRB Group D (CEN 09/2025) has one written stage, a Computer Based Test that sets your merit. The Physical Efficiency Test, document verification and medical examination that follow are qualifying.
Computer Based Test pattern
One objective paper of 100 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. The section split is only indicative, so the actual paper may vary slightly. Because the CBT runs in several sessions on the same syllabus, shortlisting uses normalised marks (para 15.0).
| Section | Questions | Marks | Per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Science | 25 | 25 | 1 mark |
| Mathematics | 25 | 25 | 1 mark |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 30 | 30 | 1 mark |
| General Awareness & Current Affairs | 20 | 20 | 1 mark |
| Total · 90 min | 100 | 100 | −1/3 each wrong |
Minimum CBT marks & the PET shortlist
To be considered for shortlisting you must reach the minimum percentage for your community. Meeting it only makes you eligible; the PET list is drawn on CBT merit.
| Community | Minimum CBT marks | Out of 100 |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 40% | 40 marks |
| EWS | 40% | 40 marks |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 30% | 30 marks |
| SC | 30% | 30 marks |
| ST | 30% | 30 marks |
For PwBD candidates these minimums may be relaxed by 2 marks if there are not enough PwBD candidates for the vacancies reserved for them.
How many are called at each stage
The notification fixes the ratios below. Railways may raise or lower the PET ratio to make sure there are enough candidates for every notified post.
| Stage | Called | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| PET | 3 times the community-wise vacancies | CBT merit |
| Document verification | Equal to the notified vacancies (1:1) | CBT merit, subject to qualifying in PET |
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Two tests, one chance each. The weight-carrying test comes first; fail it and you are out at that stage. Pass it and you take the run after a recovery gap. The PET must be passed but adds nothing to your score.
Test 1 · Lift & carry
Lift a sandbag with no handle from a bench at about waist height and carry it 100 m in 2 minutes without putting it down.
Test 2 · Run
A 1,000 m run in one chance. Transgender candidates get the female standards. PwBD candidates, ex-servicemen and Course Completed Act Apprentices are exempt from the PET.
How each stage is marked
Only the CBT is scored. Know the cost of a wrong answer before you decide which questions to attempt.
| Stage | How it counts |
|---|---|
| CBT — correct answer | +1 |
| CBT — wrong answer | −1/3 |
| PET (weight carrying & run) | Qualifying |
| Document verification | Qualifying · original certificates checked |
| Medical examination | Qualifying · standard A-2, A-3, B-1 or C-1 by post |
Empanelment follows CBT performance, subject to qualifying in the PET. If two or more candidates have the same marks, the older candidate ranks higher; if the age is also the same, the given name (not the surname) in alphabetical order breaks the tie.
