How IBPS RRB Clerk selection works
IBPS RRB Clerk is the Office Assistant (Multipurpose) post in CRP RRBs-XV, one common recruitment process for 28 Regional Rural Banks. Clear the prelims and you are shortlisted for the Main exam. There is no interview for this post. Mains marks alone build the merit list, and candidates are provisionally allotted within the RRBs of the State/UT they opted for, depending on the vacancies available in each state.
Stage-by-stage flow
- Pre-exam training (optional)IBPS may run online pre-exam training for a limited number of SC, ST, OBC, minority-community, ex-servicemen and PwBD candidates who opted for it in the application. It is tentatively in November 2026, and attending it gives no right to selection.
- Prelims — qualifying online testScore at least the minimum cut-off in both tests, Reasoning and Numerical Ability. An adequate number of candidates in each category is then shortlisted for Mains. Prelims marks are not carried forward.
- Mains — five objective testsYou need a minimum score in each test and a total high enough in the merit order to be shortlisted for provisional allotment.
- Provisional allotmentShortlisted candidates are allotted to RRBs of the State/UT they opted for, based on Mains merit and the vacancies RRBs actually report.
- Document verification & joiningThe allotted RRB verifies your eligibility documents and identity; the offer of appointment and joining formalities are its decision.
Prelims — the gateway
A 45-minute online objective test made up of two separately timed tests: Reasoning (40 questions, 40 marks, 25 minutes) and Numerical Ability (40 questions, 40 marks, 20 minutes). You must qualify in both by reaching the minimum cut-off marks. The scores are used only to shortlist candidates for Mains, category by category. Both tests are offered in English and Hindi, and in many states in the regional language as well. The IBPS calendar sets the 2026 prelims for 6, 12 and 13 December (the notification says November/December 2026).
Mains — the decider
Five separately timed objective tests: Reasoning (40 questions, 50 marks, 30 min), Computer Knowledge (40 questions, 20 marks, 15 min), General Awareness (40 questions, 40 marks, 15 min), English Language or Hindi Language, whichever one you choose (40 questions, 40 marks, 30 min), and Numerical Ability (40 questions, 50 marks, 30 min) — 200 questions and 200 marks in 120 minutes. You need a minimum score in each test. How many candidates are shortlisted for provisional allotment depends on the vacancies available in each state, and only Mains marks count towards the final merit list. The IBPS calendar sets the 2026 Mains for 30 January 2027 (the notification says December 2026/February 2027).
Local language proficiency
For Office Assistants, proficiency in the local language prescribed by the participating RRB is an essential qualification. Table A of the notification lists the language for each RRB — for example Telugu in Andhra Pradesh, Marathi in Maharashtra, and Hindi in Bihar and Rajasthan. The notification does not describe a separate language test.
Documents & joining
There is no interview for Office Assistants, so your documents are checked at document verification, on or before the day you join the allotted RRB. Bring originals with self-attested photocopies: the printout of your online application form, date-of-birth proof, photo ID, graduation mark-sheets or certificates (result declared on or before 21 September 2026), and caste, EWS, disability or ex-servicemen certificates in the prescribed formats, as applicable. If you don’t produce the required documents, you cannot continue in the process.
Provisional allotment is not an offer of employment. The allotted RRB verifies your eligibility and identity, and the offer of appointment, its terms and the joining formalities are entirely its decision. Ex-servicemen candidates produce their discharge certificate or pension payment order and proof of rank at the time of joining.
Final merit & RRB allotment
Your Mains marks alone decide the merit list. You must clear the minimum score in every Mains test and rank high enough to be shortlisted. Provisional allotment follows, tentatively in February/March 2027. It is restricted to the RRBs of the State/UT you opted for and made against the vacancies RRBs actually report. When two candidates have the same score, the older one ranks higher. Reserved-category candidates selected on General-category norms are treated as General candidates. A reserve list, to the extent of vacancies as per extant provisions, may be drawn in each category. It expires one year after provisional allotment, or earlier if a fresh allotment is made.
