Syllabus & pattern at a glance
RBI Assistant is an online exam in two phases, both fully objective, followed by a Language Proficiency Test (LPT). Prelims is a screening test; candidates for the LPT are picked on the Main exam aggregate, and there is no interview.
Prelims exam pattern
Three objective tests, each separately timed at 20 minutes. You must qualify in each test separately, and about 10 times the vacancies are shortlisted for mains in descending order of aggregate marks.
| Test | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Prelims syllabus, test by test
RBI’s advertisement gives only the name, questions, marks and time of each test; an information handout is sent with the call letter. Tap a test for the topics commonly tested under it — use them as a study checklist, not an official list.
Mains exam pattern
Five separately timed objective tests — 200 questions, 200 marks, 135 minutes. Again you must qualify in each test separately; about 2 times the vacancies are then called for the LPT on the basis of the Main exam aggregate.
| Mains test | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Test of Reasoning | 40 | 40 |
| Test of English Language | 40 | 40 |
| Test of Numerical Ability | 40 | 40 |
| Test of General Awareness | 40 | 40 |
| Test of Computer Knowledge | 40 | 40 |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
Mains syllabus, test by test
Mains goes deeper than prelims and adds two tests of its own — General Awareness and Computer Knowledge. Topic chips are commonly tested areas — RBI does not publish a topic list for any mains test.
How marks are split across tests
RBI does not publish topic-wise weightage. It does fix the marks for each test — in mains, all five tests carry 40 marks each, but the clock differs: 30 minutes each for Reasoning, English and Numerical Ability, 25 for General Awareness and 20 for Computer Knowledge.
