Overview

Syllabus & pattern at a glance

IBPS SO is an online exam in two phases, followed by a common interview. The tests you sit depend on your post: there are two versions of prelims and two of mains. In mains, only Professional Knowledge decides merit. Every other mains test is qualifying.

Written in English. IBPS gives only the number of questions, the marks, the time and the medium. It doesn’t say what the two questions will be about or how the paper is used in merit. Regular practice of timed writing in English is the safe preparation.
Rajbhasha Adhikaris take this in place of the English descriptive paper. It is offered in English and Hindi. As with the other descriptive paper, IBPS publishes no topic list. Timed practice of translation and writing in Hindi and English is the natural preparation.

How marks are split across tests

IBPS does not publish topic-wise weightage. It does fix the marks for each test. Professional Knowledge carries the most marks at both stages, and in mains it is the only test used for merit.

FAQ

Syllabus questions, answered

No. Section D of the CRP SPL-XVI notification lists only the tests for each post, with their questions, marks, timing and medium. It gives no topic list for Professional Knowledge or for the descriptive paper. The topic lists on this page are commonly studied areas.
No. Everyone takes English Language, Reasoning and Professional Knowledge, but Professional Knowledge is set in the field of your own post. IT, Agricultural Field, HR/Personnel and Marketing Officers also take Quantitative Aptitude. Law Officers and Rajbhasha Adhikaris take General Awareness with special reference to the Banking Industry instead. In mains, Rajbhasha Adhikaris take a Professional Knowledge descriptive paper (English and Hindi), and the other five posts take a descriptive paper in English.
Prelims is a screening test, and its marks aren’t carried forward. In mains, every test except Professional Knowledge is qualifying, and merit listing is done on your Professional Knowledge score. The final merit list combines mains and the 100-mark interview in an 80:20 ratio.
For every wrong answer in an objective test, one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. This applies to both prelims and mains. In prelims Professional Knowledge, each question carries 2 marks, so a wrong answer costs 0.5. A question left blank carries no penalty.
The structure changed. In the 2025 cycle (CRP SPL-XV), prelims had three tests of 50 questions each (150 questions, 125 marks, 2 hours), with no Professional Knowledge. Mains was a Professional Knowledge test only. For 2026, prelims has four tests including Professional Knowledge, and mains adds qualifying general tests and a descriptive paper.
Every test except English Language and the English descriptive paper is offered in English and Hindi. That includes Professional Knowledge and the Rajbhasha descriptive paper. Inside JobSafal, you can study in either language.
