From rank to service

How your service is decided

The notification sets out a fixed sequence. Your preferences matter as much as your rank, so fill them carefully.

  1. Rank in the final merit listMains written marks (1,750) plus Personality Test marks (275) decide your rank. Prelims marks don’t count.
  2. Your order of preferencesYou indicate an order of preference only for the services you’re interested in. If you indicate none, you won’t be considered for service allocation (para B.4).
  3. Home cadre for IAS / IPSIf you want the IAS or IPS, you also indicate your home cadre preference, as and when UPSC asks for it.
  4. No changes laterOnce submitted, service and home-cadre preferences can’t be changed, except in the update window described in para B.3 (para B.5).
  5. Allocation by the GovernmentAfter UPSC recommends you, the Government allots one of the services you preferred, subject to the other conditions, including medical standards.

For details on service allocation and cadre allotment, the notification points to DoPT’s websites, dopt.gov.in and cseplus.nic.in.

Already selected?

Rules for candidates already in a service

Section (V) of the notification restricts who can take CSE 2026 again after an earlier selection. These rules apply to every candidate.

IAS and IFS members

If you were appointed to the IAS or the Indian Foreign Service through an earlier exam and are still a member, you can’t take CSE 2026.

IPS can’t be chosen again

A candidate already selected or appointed to the IPS through an earlier exam can’t opt for, or be allotted, the IPS again through CSE 2026.

One more try with exemption

If CSE 2026 gets you the IPS or a Central Group A service, you can sit CSE 2027 only after a one-time exemption from training, joining only the Foundation Course.

Resign to go further

To sit CSE 2028 or later, such a candidate must resign from the allotted service. Earlier allottees (CSE 2025 or before) get one chance in CSE 2026 or 2027 without resigning.

The actual job

What the services do

The notification lists the services but doesn’t describe the duties. Here’s a general picture of each group of services. Actual work depends on the service, cadre and posting — tap one to expand.

General administration in a state cadre and the Central Government: running district and departmental administration, implementing government schemes and policy, and working on policy in ministries and departments.
India’s diplomatic service: representing the country in missions abroad, handling relations with other countries, and working on foreign policy at home.
Leadership roles in policing in a state cadre and in central organisations: law and order, crime prevention and investigation, and internal security.
The two Indian Revenue Services handle direct and indirect taxes and customs. The audit and accounts services (audit and accounts, civil accounts, defence accounts, and posts & telecom accounts and finance) look after government audit, accounts and financial management.
Railway management (traffic, personnel, accounts) and the Railway Protection Force, the postal service, defence estates, information, trade and corporate law: management roles in the department or ministry that runs each service.
Administration and policing in Delhi and the Union Territories (DANICS, DANIPS) and in Puducherry (PONDICS, PONDIPS), and the Section Officer’s grade of the Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service.

Pay and career growth

The CSE 2026 notification and UPSC’s press notes don’t give pay scales, allowances or promotion timelines. These are set by the Government of India and the rules of each service. For reliable details after allotment, check with DoPT and the cadre controlling authority of your service, not unofficial salary charts.
