How scores are worked out and used
The CSE 2026 notification (Appendix I) and the result press note set out these rules:
Final merit list
Final ranking adds the seven Mains papers counted for merit — Essay, General Studies I–IV and two optional papers, 250 marks each, 1,750 in all — and the Personality Test, 275 marks with no minimum qualifying marks. The grand total is 2,025. Prelims marks and the qualifying Paper A and Paper B are not added. About twice the number of vacancies are called for the Personality Test, and services are allotted by rank and the preferences you gave.
If two candidates have the same final marks, the one with more marks in the compulsory papers (Essay and GS I–IV) plus the Personality Test ranks higher; if still tied, more marks in the compulsory papers alone; then the older candidate. Any remaining tie is resolved by the Commission.
How UPSC cut-offs workWhat happens after the Mains written result
Clearing the written part isn’t the finish line — the Personality Test and service allocation remain.
- Update your applicationUPSC opens a 15-day window after the written result. Candidates called for the Personality Test must log in, update their details and upload proof of passing the qualifying degree. Without this, candidature is cancelled and no e-summon letter is issued.
- Personality Test275 marks, with no minimum qualifying marks. About twice the number of vacancies are called. UPSC has not announced the dates yet.
- Final resultRank on Mains written marks plus Personality Test marks, out of 2,025. After this, UPSC publishes the Prelims 2026 marks, cut-offs and answer keys.
- Service allocationThe Government allots services by rank and the service preferences you gave; IAS and IPS aspirants also give home cadre preferences. Interviewed candidates who are not recommended can appear on UPSC’s Pratibha Setu portal if they consented.
