IBPS PO 2026: Section-Wise Strategy to Score 80+ in Prelims and Mains

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) Probationary Officer exam is the primary gateway to officer-level positions in 11 public sector banks across India, including Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Union Bank of India. With approximately 4,000 to 6,000 vacancies annually and over 10 lakh applicants, a focused strategy is the difference between selection and another attempt.

This guide provides a concrete, section-wise plan to clear both Prelims and Mains in your first or next attempt.

Prelims Strategy: Secure 80+ in 60 Minutes

The Prelims cut-off for General category candidates typically falls between 55 and 70 marks. Scoring 80+ ensures you clear comfortably across all categories. Here is how to allocate your time.

English Language (Target: 22-25 out of 30)

Time allocation: 15 minutes (save 5 minutes for other sections)

English is the fastest section to complete if your basics are strong. The question distribution is usually:

  • Reading Comprehension: 1 passage with 7-10 questions. Read the passage once carefully, then answer. Do not re-read for every question.
  • Cloze Test: 5-7 questions. Focus on context and grammar. Eliminate obviously wrong options first.
  • Error Spotting / Sentence Correction: 5-7 questions. Know your grammar rules -- subject-verb agreement, parallelism, tense consistency.
  • Fill in the Blanks: 3-5 questions. Vocabulary-based. Learn 500 frequently tested banking exam words.
Quick win: If the RC passage is long and complex, skip it initially. Complete cloze test, error spotting, and fill-in-the-blanks first (takes 7-8 minutes), then return to RC with the remaining time.

Quantitative Aptitude (Target: 25-28 out of 35)

Time allocation: 22 minutes (borrow 2 minutes from English)

This section determines your Prelims score. The question mix typically includes:

  • Number Series: 5 questions. Practice identifying patterns -- arithmetic, geometric, mixed, alternating. These should take 3-4 minutes maximum.
  • Simplification/Approximation: 5 questions. Master BODMAS and learn squares up to 30, cubes up to 15, and fraction-percentage conversions. Target: 2-3 minutes.
  • Data Interpretation: 5-10 questions from 1-2 sets (table, bar graph, pie chart). Attempt the easier set first.
  • Arithmetic Word Problems: 10-15 questions covering percentage, profit-loss, SI/CI, time-work, time-speed-distance, mixture-alligation, partnership.
Priority approach: Solve in this order -- Simplification (fastest), Number Series, Arithmetic (cherry-pick easy ones), DI (attempt the simpler set fully).

Reasoning Ability (Target: 28-32 out of 35)

Time allocation: 23 minutes (borrow 3 minutes from English)

Reasoning is the highest-scoring section for well-prepared candidates.

  • Puzzles and Seating Arrangement: 15-20 questions from 3-4 sets. This is the backbone of the section. Practice linear arrangement, circular arrangement, floor-based puzzles, and scheduling puzzles.
  • Syllogism: 3-5 questions. Learn the Venn diagram method -- it is faster and more accurate than verbal reasoning.
  • Inequality: 3-5 questions. Master coded inequality and direct inequality. These are guaranteed marks.
  • Blood Relations / Direction / Order-Ranking: 3-5 questions. Quick to solve with practice.
  • Coding-Decoding: 3-5 questions.
Critical tip: In puzzles, if you are stuck on a set for more than 4 minutes, move on. Return to it only if time permits. Many candidates lose the exam by spending 10 minutes on a single difficult puzzle.

Mains Strategy: Maximize Your Score

Mains is where ranks are decided. The difficulty level jumps significantly from Prelims.

Data Analysis and Interpretation (Target: 35-40 out of 60)

This section carries the highest marks per question (approximately 1.71 marks each). Focus on:

  • Caselet DI: Data presented in paragraph form. Practice converting text to tables.
  • Missing DI: Tables or charts with missing values you must calculate.
  • Quantity Comparison: Two quantities are given; determine which is greater. Often solvable without full calculation.
  • Data Sufficiency: Determine if the given data is sufficient to answer the question.
Practice resource: Solve 2 DI sets daily from previous year IBPS PO, SBI PO, and RBI Assistant papers. The question styles overlap significantly.

Reasoning and Computer Aptitude (Target: 35-40 out of 60)

Mains reasoning is puzzle-heavy. Expect:

  • 4-5 puzzle/seating arrangement sets (20-25 questions)
  • Input-output machine (5 questions)
  • Logical reasoning: statement-assumption, statement-conclusion, cause-effect (5-8 questions)
  • Computer aptitude: basics of hardware, software, networking, MS Office, database concepts (5-8 questions)
Preparation approach: Practice 3-4 puzzle sets daily. Start with 3-variable puzzles and gradually increase to 5-variable puzzles. For computer aptitude, Arihant or Kiran's computer awareness books are sufficient.

General/Economy/Banking Awareness (Target: 25-30 out of 40)

This section can make or break your Mains score. It requires consistent daily preparation.

Banking Awareness (15-18 questions):
  • Know RBI policies: repo rate, reverse repo rate, CRR, SLR, MSF, bank rate
  • Financial inclusion schemes: Jan Dhan Yojana, MUDRA, Stand-Up India
  • Banking terminology: NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, UPI, NACH, NPA classification
  • Recent mergers, new bank licenses, and digital banking developments
Current Affairs (12-15 questions):
  • Cover the last 6 months before the exam
  • Focus on: government schemes, international summits, awards, appointments, defence deals, economic indicators (GDP, inflation, fiscal deficit)
Static GK (5-8 questions):
  • Headquarters of international organizations (IMF, World Bank, ADB, AIIB)
  • Important rivers, dams, national parks
  • Constitutional bodies and their functions

English Language (Target: 25-30 out of 40)

Mains English tests comprehension and expression at a higher level:

  • Reading Comprehension: 2 passages (10-12 questions). Expect inference and vocabulary-in-context questions.
  • Error Spotting: Column-based format with multiple errors per sentence.
  • Sentence Rearrangement / Para Jumbles: 5 questions. Look for opening and closing sentences first.
  • Word Replacement / Phrase Replacement: 5 questions.

Interview Preparation (100 Marks)

If you clear Mains, you face a 15-20 minute interview conducted by the participating bank's panel. Key areas:

  1. Self-introduction: Prepare a 2-minute introduction covering education, achievements, and why banking.
  2. Why banking as a career? Have a genuine answer -- mention financial inclusion, digital transformation, or rural banking.
  3. Current affairs: RBI's latest monetary policy, Union Budget highlights, recent banking frauds and regulatory responses.
  4. Subject knowledge: Questions from your graduation subject.
  5. Situational questions: "A customer is angry about a failed transaction. How do you handle it?"
Dress code: Formal attire. Men: full-sleeve shirt, trousers, tie. Women: formal salwar kameez or western formals.

Common Mistakes That Derail IBPS PO Preparation

  1. Ignoring sectional cut-offs in Prelims: Many candidates focus on overall score and neglect a weak section. Even scoring 90/100 overall will not help if you score below the sectional cut-off in English or Reasoning.
  1. Starting Mains preparation only after Prelims results: The gap between Prelims and Mains is typically 45-60 days. This is not enough time to build Mains-level competence from scratch. Start Mains preparation alongside Prelims from day one.
  1. Memorizing banking awareness without understanding: RBI monetary policy questions require understanding of cause and effect, not just rate values. Know why RBI increases the repo rate (to control inflation) and what the downstream effects are (higher EMIs, reduced credit growth).
  1. Taking too many mock tests without analysis: One mock test with 2 hours of analysis is worth more than 3 mock tests with no analysis. Maintain an error log and review it weekly.
  1. Neglecting the interview component: Interview carries 20% weightage in the final merit. Candidates who prepare only for written exams and ignore interview preparation leave significant marks on the table.
